Albany Community Action member Céline Wallace set up a meeting with 2 police departments hosted by Albany’s Mayor and Vice Mayor about safety on the Greenway. Céline organized this after her husband was held up at gunpoint on the greenway a few weeks ago, but before a Greenway shooting/murder took place in late April.
Representatives from the Albany and El Cerrito Police Departments will be on hand to provide information on crime trends and strategies affecting safe travel on the Ohlone Greenway.
Join the City’s Recreation Department at the parklet in front of As You Wish Frozen Yogurt for an all-ages and all-abilities Bike About Town – we will cruise around town as a group from 7-7:30 while emphasizing bicycle safety.
Then we’ll meet back at the corner of Cornell & Solano Avenue for a “Bike-in Movie”. We will be showing ‘Chariots of Fire,’ a film sure to spark you to get out and run!
Ride your bike on down – there will plenty of space to park your bike in a protected area. The popcorn is free and will be flowing freely! This film is PG. Bring a blanket and a lawn chair.
Special thanks to As You Wish Frozen Yogurt for sponsoring this bike-tacular event. In case of inclement weather, check the Albany Rec Department’s Facebook page for event status updates.
The City of Albany’s Recreation Department is getting into the spirit of Bike Month with a Bike in Movie!
They will be showing “Pee-wee’s Big Adventure” (PG), a family-friendly comedy about one man-child’s cross-country adventure in search of his beloved stolen bike. It’s a bizarre story of perseverance and hope in times of adversity, and is chock-full of zany characters.
Ride your bike on down to the Albany Community Center and join us for this fabulous Bike Month event! There will have plenty of space to park your bike in a protected area, complete with a massive bike rack.
The popcorn is free and will be flowing freely!
Do you or someone you know want to ride more but don’t feel confident enough?
Here’s a FREE bicycle skills class, courtesy of Bike East Bay…and it’s RIGHT HERE IN ALBANY!!
Learn basic rules of the road, how to share the road with cars on busy streets, how to equip your bicycle, lock your bike, fit your helmet, and avoid crashes by riding predictably, visibly, and communicating with other road users by your actions and signals. Every workshop has the same content so you only need to attend once. For adults and teens, no bike needed.
Attending this or any of our other classroom workshops qualifies you to also sign up for one of Bike East Bay’s free “Day 2” on-the-bike road classes and earn a free set of bike lights!
Class is FREE but please register here.

Laws and best practices particular to Albany and nearby neighborhoods will be covered.
Every attendee will receive a free set of bike lights!!!
A functional bike and helmet are required, drinks and snacks provided. (The idea is to have attended an Urban Cycling 101 Day 1:One of these two Classroom courses first. If you were not able but still want to attend this class, please email Robert Prinz and he can make other arrangements.)

“The program explores the inviting and spectacular public places along the Bay Trail route. On each show, we spotlight a particular place and have guests providing inside knowledge on what to expect and how to make the most of your visits. We also discuss the wide array of activities the Bay Trail supports such as hiking, biking, kayaking, photography, birding, swimming and many others. We talk about the wildlife you can see and history you’ll learn about along the Trail. Each month’s show will provide specific recommendations and valuable information to help you make the most of this amazing public resource.”
Here’s a brief preview of this Bay Trail Confidential program:
“We’ll be joined by Sally Dinwoodie and Barbara Christianson, who have led a group of women who circumnavigated the Bay on foot over a period of four years. Journalist Aleta George has written about their adventures and will also appear on the show. In addition, I’ll begin talking about the Bay Trail Taco project and give information on how to get more involved.”
The program is hosted by SF City Guides. We’re grateful to everyone who can make a donation and help us keep our non-profit strong as we weather the pandemic.
On my program, I encourage people to ask questions and share thoughts using Chat. At the end of the one-hour program, we invite attendees to unmute and share thoughts.
I hope many of you will be able to join us. We’ve already explored a lot of other terrific Bay Trail places including Coyote Hills in Fremont, the new Crane Cove Park in SF and the many Bay Trail segments in Richmond. We reach people all over the Bay Area, and my hope is that each show will encourage many to check out new segments.
