Get out and connect with your community and urban environment in a transformative way!
Sunday Streets (also called “Open Streets”) closes streets to automobile traffic for a day so that people may use the space for other physical and social activities. The streets become parks as people replace car traffic. People walk, bike, skate and dance and play. Everyone from businesses and community organizations to musicians and artists use the space creatively, engaging the public and providing spontaneity and discovery. This temporary public space inspires creativity and change for the better, on that day – and beyond.
The first Sunday Streets Berkeley was on October 14, 2012. More than 42,000 people came to Shattuck Ave to stroll, skate, cycle, dance, play in the street. People came from all over the Bay Area to experience Berkeley anew. Local Berkeley businesses reported a 30-50% increase in sales on the day of the event. The first-ever Sunday Streets Berkeley was by all measures a great success.
Previous routes have been expanded – Sunday Streets now runs the length of Shattuck from Rose to Channing, and continues on Durant to Telegraph.
Here’s an interactive map of Sunday Streets activities.

If you’ve volunteered at any event over the past few years, we’d like to thank you for your service to the active transportation community! Please join us at our Holiday Happy Hour Meeting & Volunteer Thank You Party!
There will be delicious appetizers, one drink per person, and swag, courtesy of AS&R. You’re welcome to order dinner, too, and Sanjiv of Everest Kitchen generously will give us 15% off their menu, including drinks.
Please RSVP to Amy at calamari@alumni.duke.edu so we have an approximate head count, can reserve a table, and can pre-order some appetizers. Also please let me know if you are vegetarian or vegan.
Of course, please bring your ideas, questions and input about cycling or walking around Albany!! As usual, this will immediately precede the Traffic & Safety Commission Meeting and will also be a good chance to talk about anything coming up on their agenda. Come and talk about walking and cycling in Albany, while eating delicious Nepali & Indian food! All are invited.
Yes, they have plenty of bike parking – feel free to stack your bikes, since many of us will be leaving simultaneously! This is our every other month (even-numbered months) informal get-together to talk about all things bike and ped in Albany. It’s a good chance to ask about what the city is up to and what our stance on issues is, and to meet others who are interested in issues related to human-scale transit/active transit.
Everyone is welcome.
Have something you want to talk or ask about? Put it in the “comments” section below! Hope to see you there! Again, please RSVP to Amy at calamari@alumni.duke.edu so we can have an approximate head count.
The Traffic & Safety Commission Meeting is a great place to make your ideas known, find out about the transportation issues and projects in Albany, and help improve things for cyclists and pedestrians in and around our town. This special date is the only time the Commission will meet during the months of November and December.
The Agenda will include:
*Kains and Adams two-way internal pilot program (to enable two-way bicycling on these streets nearest San Pablo)
*Washington on the Hill [Clear Sidewalks] Project: Draft plan to allow cars to park on the northern sidewalks and not park on the southern sidewalks on Washington between Cerrito and Pierce. (This is a small part of a larger plan to free up sidewalk access for pedestrians so that adults and kids won’t have to enter the street to move along Washington in this area.)
*Codornices Creek Restoration Project: includes bike/ped path
The agenda and all attachments are here.
