This fun and entertaining workshop is taught by one of our bicycle safety instructors certified by the League of American Bicyclists. Learn basic rules of the road, how to share the road with cars on busy streets, equip your bicycle, fit your helmet, use transit, and avoid crashes by riding predictably, visibly, and communicating with motorists by your actions and signals. No bike required.

Get the whole family rolling at Street Level Cycles‘ Spring Used Bike Sale on Saturday, May 11th, 10am-6pm! National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA) will screen “Singletrack High” at your local REI. Pedal Born Picture’s new documentary chronicles the high school cycling movement. This inspiring flick follows six student-athletes through the 2012 season in NICA’s NorCal High School Cycling League. The filmmakers documented the positive impacts of keeping kids active on bikes at the age when many trade in two wheels for four. Come witness the transformative power of cycling! A suggested donation of $10 will directly benefit National Interscholastic Cycling Association.

Here’s an opportunity to give them your input! Make plans to attend their Community Work Session and tell them what’s important to you as an Albany resident or visitor. They want to clearly identify resident’s priorities for the next 3-5 years and plan to incorporate those priorities into their strategic planning process. Your opinion matters… so let them know what matters to you at this meeting!

They also set up an obstacle course, offer free minor repairs to community members bringing their own bike to the event, have a food truck on site, and generally try to make it a fun celebration of bicycling even for those not coming to buy a used bike. Details are below and at the following link.
The Harding ReCycle is a bicycle festival where you can
- buy a “ReCycled” bicycle refurbished by the Harding Dad’s Club bike mechanics
- get basic repairs on your bike for free
- learn how to make repairs yourself
- bring or borrow a bike and ride our obstacle course
- compete in the “Slowest Bike Race”
- learn how to ride without training wheels
Buy a $2 raffle ticket to be entered in a raffle for a brand new kids bike valued at $350!!
Have a bike to donate? They’ll accept donations of used bicycles up to and including the day of the Harding Recycle. Arrange for your donation to be picked up from your home by emailing hardingrecycle@gmail.com, or bring it to the event on May 21st.

May is Bike Month – Join the City’s Rec Department and your fellow Strollers & Rollers at the Albany Community Center for a “Bike-in Movie.” Easily the best film with a bike theme (Sorry, “Pee Wee’s Big Adventure,”) having won an Academy Award and been nominated for 3 others, “Breaking Away,” a fun, family-friendly movie about a teenage boy’s dream of becoming a professional cyclist, will be showing.
Ride your bike on down to the Albany Community Center and join us for this fabulous Bike Month event! The City will have plenty of space to park your bike in a protected area, complete with a massive bike rack. The popcorn is free and will be flowing! This film is PG. In addition to the regular first-Mondays classes at UC Berkeley, they have now set up a free Urban Cycling 101 Day 1 classroom workshop for adults and teens at the Albany Library/Community Center on Saturday, July 16th, from 1-3pm. Complete details and registrations are available here.

Do you or your family ride on the Ohlone Greenway? Attend this meeting to work on making it safer for all.
Albany Community Action member Céline Wallace set up a meeting with 2 police departments hosted by Albany’s Mayor and Vice Mayor about safety on the Greenway. Céline organized this after her husband was held up at gunpoint on the greenway a few weeks ago, but before a Greenway shooting/murder took place in late April.
Representatives from the Albany and El Cerrito Police Departments will be on hand to provide information on crime trends and strategies affecting safe travel on the Ohlone Greenway.
Blue Heron Bikes is hosting a screening of MOTHERLOAD, the movie, Thursday, July 18th.
Doors open at 6:15, shows at 7:00.
