Questions for the 2012 Albany City Council Candidates

City Council Candidate Questionnaire

The Albany Strollers & Rollers met and selected seven questions for the seven candidates from among the many suggestions, after having solicited ideas for questions on our email Discussion List. The answers appear below in the order received. Choosing good questions was a struggle, and we are grateful to the candidates […]

City Council Candidate Question 1: The role of bicycling and walking in civic life

1. What do you see as the role of bicycling and walking in our civic life?

[Sheri Spellwoman] I am a huge bicycling and walking enthusiast! My family and I walk and bike many places for transportation, for exercise and to spend time outdoors. One of the things I love most about Albany is its […]

City Council Candidate Question 2: Safety on the Roads

2. Are you aware of the number of people that are injured on the roads in Albany each year? Do you think that conditions for bicycling or walking in our city could or should be improved?

[Sheri Spellwoman] This is a great question. The Albany Police Department does not keep statistics of traffic accidents, […]

City Council Candidate Question 3: Active Transportation Plan Funding

3. Albany’s Active Transportation Plan (ATP) (http://albanypedbikeplan.fehrandpeers.net/) was approved by City Council in Spring 2012. Are there particular elements of this plan that you support or oppose? Most projects included in the ATP are unfunded. Would you fund implementation of these projects? If so, how?

[Sheri Spellwoman] I support Albany’s ATP. I want to have […]

City Council Candidate Question 4: Reducing speeds for safety

4. Traffic during the times when children arrive and depart from school is heavy. Reducing traffic speeds by 1% reduces the probability of fatalities by 5%. http://bikeportland.org/2010/09/01/in-london-20s-plenty-fast-enough-38816). Would you support reducing speed limits to 15mph near schools during these times?

[Sheri Spellwoman] I would be open to hearing arguments for and against this idea. I […]

City Council Candidate Question 5: Sidewalks

5. Sidewalks and roads are public infrastructure on public land. Roads are maintained by the public, in part through a parcel tax, while sidewalks are expected to be maintained by private property owners. AS&R’s 2011 sidewalk census (http://www.albanystrollroll.org/current-projects/sidewalk-census/) shows that many of our sidewalks are impassable or hazardous to many users. How would you address […]

City Council Candidate Question 6: University Village Development

6. The current design of the University Village Mixed Use project does not include any cycling lanes or paths connecting to or through the proposed project from any of Albany’s cycling routes. (http://www.albanystrollroll.org/university-village-mixed-use-project-legal-action-and-negotiation/) The traffic it generates could form a barrier to safe cycling connections that are important to Albany families. (The bicycle routes that […]

City Council Candidate Question 7: Safeway design

7. The current Safeway design does not have an adequate bike parking area and has the potential to negatively impact sidewalk users on Solano. Will you require resolving these issues prior to approval?

[Sheri Spellwoman] Yes! I strongly believe the project should include state of the art bicycle access and parking, including spaces for bike […]

CIP, paint and signs

[From Preston Jordan]

The following message was sent today regarding the Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) adoption on the Council agenda as item 6-3 tomorrow night. AS&R tried to get this Plan to include implementation of paint and sign improvements on cycling routes in 2010 with no success, and is trying again this year (the CIP […]

Election 2010: City Council Candidates Respond to ASR

Joanne Wile did not answer the questionnaire.

Marge Atkinson states in response to question 11 that there is a cycling/walking master planning workshop on October 25th. Please note the workshop is actually on October 23rd from 9 to 4 at city hall.

Marge Atkinson’s response failed to note she voted against the upcoming Pierce Street […]
