International Walk & Roll to School Day @ Albany Elementary School and Middle School
Oct 3 @ 2:30 pm – 4:00 pm

All year AS&R members sell rear lights to the public, and for every one we sell, an Albany student gets one free! Over the past few years we’ve installed more than 800 lights on kids’ bikes.
This event, International Walk & Roll to School Day is the payoff – AS&R volunteers and school parents install lights on kids bikes, helping them ride to and from school and activities more safely.
As you can imagine, this is a tough task so we could use your help that morning!!
Send an email to any of the AS&R Core Group to volunteer – thanks!

Street Level Cycles/Waterside Workshops Holiday Party @ Street Level Cycles/Waterside Workshops
Dec 9 @ 8:00 pm – Dec 10 @ 2:00 am

You probably know Street Level Cycles as the group who has given free bike tuneups at the annual Albany Arts & Green Festival. They’re much more than that, so come to their holiday party to find out more!
Join them for an afternoon of food and fun to raise funds for their youth programs!
Waterside Workshops has received a $10,000 challenge grant, and you can help us reach our goal by attending our event!
A donation of $10 per person gets you:
* a free boat rental
* wooden toy-making for kids
* entry into the kids or adult bike raffle
Also, Doc’s of the Bay will be here with their gourmet food truck serving up mouth-watering locally-sourced fare and the Cookie Department will be sampling their amazing cookies, the perfect addition to a cup of our famous Waterside hand-crafted coffee.  Our interns have been hard at work creating fine wooden handcrafts and building bicycles for the whole family, so while you are here, don’t forget to visit our Holiday Sale to mark a few names off of your list.  During the event, we will give away 25 kids bicycles to local low-income families.  If you know a family in need of a kid’s bicycle, please tell them to contact us before the event! At 5pm, we will be showing “Waterside” a documentary film about our organization and its role in the community.  All proceeds from this event will go directly to supporting our free programs for low-income youth.  Please join us on the 9th to kick-off the Holiday Season while giving back to your community!

This is perfect timing for Bike to School Day, Bike to School Day and all the activities we’ll have in Albany during May, “Bike Month!”

Free bicycle helmets will be given to youth participants. Rodeo activities will include bike inspections, safety information, and a bicycle safety course. The goal of the bicycle rodeo is to encourage riders to wear helmets on every ride, to give young cyclists basic skills for on-road riding, and to teach them the rules of the road to help keep them safe. This event focuses on young riders in elementary and middle school.
AS&R will again be working with kids, showing them how to ride their bikes safely and responsibly.
We’ll also have our  “Check for Bikes” clings on hand for parents…and the famous Bicycle Blender so everyone can pedal-power a delicious smoothie!
We could still use some help running the bike blender station and talking to parents and kids. Any takers, please? If so, please contact Amy Smolens or Ken McCroskey.

The Major Taylor Bike Fiesta @ Lincoln Elementary School
Jun 1 @ 5:00 pm – 10:00 pm

kids-at-mtbf-300x225The Major Taylor Bike Fiesta will occur on June 1st from 10am-3pm at Lincoln Elementary School located at 29 6th Street, Richmond, California.  This will be a celebration of the life and accomplishments of Marshall “Major” Taylor, the first African American professional cyclist.  Born in 1878, Major Taylor had a professional racing career that spanned 13 years and included the world one-mile track cycling championship in 1899.  He remained committed to his passion in the face of adversity and is a source of inspiration.
At the Bike Fiesta event, Fix the Cycle aims to spread awareness of the health benefits associated with safe bike riding.  The fun educational activities for youth and adults will take place in a family friendly environment that encourages cycling.  Activities include yoga, Zumba, the Cyclecide bike circus, and entertainment by Raw Talent and Earth Amplified powered by Rock the Bike.  The Richmond Police Department and Cycles of Change will be running bike rodeo courses for youth throughout the day.  The event will also include helmet giveaways and Fix the Cycle will be raffling free bicycles, bicycling gear, and other great prizes gear for youth and adults.  There will be free healthy food, health screenings, educational booths, and simple bike maintenance repairs while supplies last.  Of course, bicycle parking will be available.
If anyone wants to ride from Albany, please make a suggested meeting time and place in “comments.”
