Want a San Pablo Avenue that is safer for your and your family to ride? I thought so!
Want protected bike lanes on San Pablo Avenue? Go to one of the El Cerrito meetings and speak up!
Opponents are up in arms over El Cerrito’s plans for designing bikeways on San Pablo Avenue, including protected bikeways in the Midtown area between its two BART stations. We need supporters at Monday’s City Council meeting. Because of opposition, it appears that the proposed Plan has removed bike lanes in sections, due mainly to concerns about parking, many of these concerns without basis. Please help us convince local businesses that you are their best customers and that you support continuous bikeways on San Pablo Avenue.
We still want to see bike lanes included at the north and south ends of San Pablo Avenue, where sharrows are currently proposed in the Downtown and Uptown areas of El Cerrito. The goal is a continuous bikeway on San Pablo Avenue between public transit, businesses, and residences, connecting you to the places you ride. Sharrows are no substitute for your safety.
Please attend the meeting and tell El Cerrito City Council that you bike to get to businesses on San Pablo Ave, that bike lanes will be good for their economy.
If you can’t attend Monday’s meeting, email Melanie Mintz, interim Community Development Director, Mayor Greg Lyman, or any of the City Council Members – Janet Abelson, Rebecca Benassini, Jan Bridges or Mark Friedman.

Sunday Streets (also called “Open Streets”) closes streets to automobile traffic for a day so that people may use the space for other physical and social activities. The streets become parks as people replace car traffic. People walk, bike, skate and dance and play. Everyone from businesses and community organizations to musicians and artists use the space creatively, engaging the public and providing spontaneity and discovery.

Bring your kids to Albany Police Activity League’s Annual Bike Rodeo!

Free bicycle helmets will be given to youth participants.
Rodeo activities will include bike inspections, safety information, and a bicycle safety course. The goal of the bicycle rodeo is to encourage riders to wear helmets on every ride, to give young cyclists basic skills for on-road riding, and to teach them the rules of the road to help keep them safe. This event focuses on young riders in elementary and middle school.
AS&R will again be working with kids, showing them how to ride their bikes safely and responsibly.
We’ll also have our ”Check for Bikes” clings on hand for parents…and the famous Bicycle Blender so everyone can pedal-power a delicious smoothie!
PLEASE VOLUNTEER: We could definitely use some help running the bike blender station and talking to parents and kids. Any takers, please? If so, please contact Amy Smolens or Ken McCroskey.

is a project of the Safe Routes to Schools Alameda County Berkeley Task Force in partnership with Berkeley Unified School District. This day of bicycle celebration and education will prepare families for Bike to School and Work Days and bring the community together on bikes in honor of the Earth.

The day will begin with a Family Cycling Workshop at 10:00am, with the festival starting at 12:00pm. Festival activities will include, bike and helmet decoration station, our annual Youth Bike Swap beginning at 11, a Bike Rodeo to practice rules of the road, helmet fittings, bike blended smoothies, bicycle inspired entertainment, a cargo bike demo station, bicycle face painting and photos booth, the bicycle Trivia Wheel, a Bike Polo demo and a whole lot more to inspire, educate and encourage bicycle riding.
