Grab your costume, decorate your bike, and don’t forget those bike lights – it’s time for the annual Halloween edition of Bike About Town!
Join Albany Strollers & Rollers and the City of Albany’s Department of Recreation with sponsor Wheels of Justice as we explore Albany by bike on Spring, Summer and Autumn evenings. Each of the events will trace different routes that pass through parts of Albany you may not have biked before. All levels of cyclists are encouraged to join us.
For anyone who doesn’t have rear lights and wants one, we’ll have some for sale at our cost and can help you install
them.
We begin at 6:30 at the little park across the street from Wheels of Justice Cyclery, at Solano and Peralta in Albany (despite what Google Maps may insist.)
Come a few minutes early to pump up your tires. Ride maps are distributed, and we take off in a big group. There are experienced cyclists to lead and bring up the rear. After wheeling about for a half hour or forty-five minutes we return to Peralta Park, just across the street from our start, for light refreshments, a raffle, and general carousing.
Dates this year are Fridays May 24, June 28, July 26, August 23, September 27 and October 25 (our annual Halloween ride!!)
Let’s join our friends and neighbors two cities to the north at the 1st Annual Richmond Peace Ride.

• Ride ends at the Richmond Plunge
• More Stops to be determined
Join them for the after party at The Natural Healing Tree, 124 Washington Ave, Richmond, 94801

If you think riding bikes is satisfying, wait till you learn how to fix them.
WOJ’s recent bike maintenance clinic at our Montclair shop was a great success, so they’re offering another one at the Albany location. Flat tires, wonky shifting, dragging brakes – there’s no reason these problems should keep you off the road or trail, so we’ll teach you how to fix them yourself so you can keep riding. That’s why we’re here, after all.
Learn how to:
Fix a flat tire
Adjust your brakes
Tune your shifting
Replace a chain
True a wheel
Adjust handlebar and seat position
Because there’s nothing more satisfying than the feeling of man (or woman) conquering machine and riding off into the sunset…
RSVP for the event on WOJ’s Facebook page.
The next Geared4Kids family bike ride is coming up. We’ll be heading north to Richmond for our August ride on Sunday the 11th. Our starting place is the playground at Nicholl Park. Our ride will take us over to the Richmond Greenway, named by East Bay Express as the Best Urban Oasis:

Joining us this month is Najari Kio’Journey Smith from Rich City-Rides, a bike advocacy group in Richmond. We hope you can make it!
Go to G4Ks’ Facebook page to RSVP.
By the way, when I did the Richmond Peace Ride recently I left the fog behind in Albany and enjoyed a sunny Richmond spin!

The family that rides together thrives together!
Safe road bicycling takes a lot more than balance, a helmet and a good attitude. Join the East Bay Bicycle Coalition’s League Certified safety instructors for a day of fun games, safety drills, skills building, and a neighborhood ride. This workshop is for kids able to ride a bike and who are ready to ride on the roadways with their parents. Parents and kids must attend together and should bring their own bikes. Each child receives a free red blinky light for participating!
It’s free, and it will help you and your family ride the roads of Albany and beyond more safely and confidently.

Want to have input into El Cerrito’s future bikeability? Here’s another chance!!
Join City Staff and officials on this bike tour, and bring your ideas for how to make El Cerrito a more bikeable, walkable, greener city!
Participants will provide input on the proposed priority projects for the City’s update to the 2007 Circulation Plan for Bicyclists and Pedestrians, as well as Urban Greening Strategies to make El Cerrito’s corridors more comfortable for cyclists. Please note that the route for this tour has not yet been set, but will be designed to accommodate a range of riders. If you are interested in participating, but have any restrictions, please contact green@ci.el-cerrito.ca.us.
Meet at El Cerrito City Hall, and don’t forget your bike!
I went to the first public meeting on the same topic and it was a great opportunity to give input about El Cerrito’s roads, paths and connections. Please go and make your thoughts known!
As usual, if you want to ride together from Albany, propose a time and a place to meet in “comments” below.
Hope to see you there!

Want to ride more but don’t have the confidence or the knowhow?
Here’s a great opportunity – a FREE bicycle safety class!
Learn basic rules of the road, how to share the road with cars on busy streets, how to equip your bicycle, lock your bike, fit your helmet, use transit, and avoid crashes by riding predictably, visibly, and communicating with motorists by your actions and signals. Every workshop has the same content so you only need to attend once. For adults and teens, no bike needed.
(Please note: All of EBBC’s UC Berkeley classes are open to the public, but are also part of the BEST (Bicycle Education & Safety Training) program allowing ticketed cyclists to have their fines reduced.)
Preregister for this free class here
The EBBC is organizing a ride on the first day that the Bay Bridge mixed-use path opens. They say:
“Join us Tuesday, Sept 3, 6pm sharp at West Oakland BART for a ride out on to the world’s longest bike pier, the new bike path of the Oakland Span of the Bay Bridge. Pizza & drinks afterwards at the Hot Italian Restaurant in Emeryville. The Bike Path closes at 8pm, so we need to get on out there! RSVP on Facebook”

AS&R will again be providing Bicycle Valet Parking at the Solano Stroll, so there’s no reason not to avoid the car traffic and parking hassles.
Location: Pumpkin Patch, north side of Solano, just west of Masonic
Thanks again to our generous sponsor, local business Bua Luang Thai Cuisine! Bua Luang has been supporting AS&R since 2008, and sponsoring our Bicycle Valet Parking services at city events since 2010.
This is a really busy event and AS&R needs your help to make our table and Bicycle Valet Parking a success. You’ll not only have fun and meet cool people, but you’ll get a free lunch!
To volunteer, please email Nick here.
The Solano Stroll is a mile-long party full of music, food, entertainment and crafts! Enjoy!! And please considering volunteering a few hours of your time – thanks!
