Bike to Work Day Resolution

BIKE TO WORK DAY RESOLUTION

WHEREAS,    Albany understands the importance of global warming and climate change; and

WHEREAS,     the City of Albany is in the process of creating a Climate Action Plan, designed to reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions; and

WHEREAS,     the City of Albany’s greenhouse gas emissions inventory indicates 43% of greenhouse gas emissions in Albany are due to transportation; and

WHEREAS,     the City of Albany is a Transit First City that emphasizes improvements for public transit, walking and cycling; and

WHEREAS,    cycling is the least polluting, lowest cost, most energy efficient and healthy mode of travel; and

WHEREAS,    during the entire month of May bicycle transportation will be celebrated and encouraged in the Bay Area through many entertaining events, fun rides, bike safety classes, and numerous energizer stations on the morning of Bike-to-Work Day, May 14, including an energizer station at Marin Avenue and the Ohlone Greenway;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT I, Marge Atkinson, Mayor of the City of Albany, do hereby officially declare that:

MAY 14, 2009 is BIKE TO WORK DAY IN ALBANY, CALIFORNIA,

in recognition of this City’s commitment to engineering for, educating about and encouraging the use of cycling; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, the City of Albany encourages everyone to consider bicycling for a day, to sign up for a free bicycle safety class at http://www.ebbc.org/?q=safety, to register to win great prizes at http://btwd.bayareabikes.org/, and for those who choose to drive, please remember to slow down and watch for those who are cycling.
