Albany Streets

October 9, 2010
We pedaled up another bunch of smoothies at Albany Streets on Saturday. There were always plenty of kids willing to pedal once we started one of our concoctions. There's a number of good photos of the bike blender with this Patch article: http://albany.patch.com/articles/city-comes-out-to-play-for-saturdays-albany-streets-festival#photo-2238287 .

Thanks so much to Angela Armendariz who spear-headed the smoothies effort and worked all-event long measuring out frozen fruit, and thanks to Amy Smolens, Heather Cunningham, Preston Jordan, and David Arkin who helped out.

Here are some photos taken by AS&R member Amy Smolens:

AS&R's booth at last weekend's Albany Streets event was a BLAST! A berry blast, that is. We provided frozen strawberriesblueberriesblackberriesraspberries and ice, and the kids (plus a few adults who managed to get in edgewise) whipped them up into smoothies with two foot-powered blenders! Over 150 mini-smoothies were served!

These photos stolen liberally from AlbanyPatch (thanks, Patch!). See the AlbanyPatch reporting of the event.
A special thanks to El Cerrito resident Howdy Goudey who brought his own, home grown, stationary bike blender for us to use. We broke it, but he promises it breaks all the time... It was hugely popular! (Please let us know if we can help fund repairs!) Also to the AS&R member, Howdy's friend, who forwarded our event announcement to Howdy!
The other blender is Rock the Bike blender attachment to a regular bike. It's a project of the Albany Task Force for Safe Routes to Schools (SRTS), associated with district PTAs and Transform, the Alameda County administrator of SRTS, along with the City of Albany. Funds to purchase the blender kit came from an ACTIA grant to improve the Marin Ave./Santa Fe Ave. intersection. The bike was donated by Cycles of Change, with parts and service donated by Wheels of Justice (Montclair), and parts donated by Solano Avenue Cycles.
Look for the bike blender at an Albany school near you, and at the next Albany Streets event on October 9!
